How to make a printable crossword
- Add your answers and clues. Enter them in the table, paste two spreadsheet columns, or import a CSV/TSV file. Choose Use fruit example for a ready-made list.
- Choose the grid size. Set the rows and columns yourself, or choose automatic sizing. Answers must connect through shared letters.
- Generate and review. The tool places your answers and keeps searching for a better layout. Use Keep this layout when you like the result, or turn on Show solution to check the letters.
- Save or print. Download a puzzle file to reopen later. Print Puzzle leaves the letters blank; Print Answer Key includes the solution; Print Both puts them on separate sheets. You can also save a PDF using your browser's print dialog.
Crossword generator questions
How many answers can I include?
Use 2–100 unique answers, each containing 2–50 letters A–Z. Each answer needs a clue. Manual grids can have 5–50 rows and columns. Large lists may need a larger grid.
Can I use phrases such as ICE CREAM?
Yes. Spaces separate the displayed word lengths, but do not take up squares. ICE CREAM fills eight squares and its clue shows (3, 5). Answers use letters A–Z; punctuation and accented letters are not supported.
Can I import answers from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Paste two columns with the answer first and the clue second, or import CSV/TSV. An Answer,Clue header is optional. Put quotes around CSV clues containing commas. The import is checked before your list changes.
Where are my answers and saved puzzles stored?
Answers and clues are processed in your browser. Drafts autosave on this device when local storage is available. Save Puzzle downloads a file you can open on another device. There is no account or server sync; clearing browser data can remove the local draft.
Why might my answers not fit?
Answers need shared letters to form one connected puzzle. Disconnected groups cannot make one crossword. If the bounded search leaves some answers out, try a larger grid, automatic sizing, or another generation attempt. Printing is available when every answer is placed.
