MAKE ROOM TO MOVE
The classic sliding puzzle
Move a tile directly beside the empty space into it. Arrange the numbers from left to right, top to bottom. Tiles cannot jump or wrap around the edges.
The goal
The 3 × 3 practice board works the same way, with tiles 1–8.
Daily puzzles and practice
The daily puzzle changes at midnight UTC. Everyone gets the same 4 × 4 board. An open game keeps its original date until you switch or reload.
Practice gives you separate saved games for each board and scramble. Starter uses 12 legal shuffle steps; Mixed uses 120. These are scramble lengths, not minimum solution lengths or difficulty ratings.
New puzzle creates another practice board. Restart returns to the exact starting board and resets its time and moves.
Keyboard, undo, and saving
Tab to a tile and press Enter or Space. With a tile focused, arrow keys move the empty space in that direction. Keyboard shortcuts apply only inside the board.
Undo and Redo change the move count. Any use of Undo marks the attempt; personal bests count only completed attempts without Undo.
The clock starts on your first legal move and stops while paused, in a hidden tab, or after completion. Your progress and personal bests are saved in this browser when storage is available.
A useful way to begin
Try the 3 × 3 Starter board first. Put the first row in order, then work on the left column. Keep the empty space near the pieces you want to move.
A tile may need to move away from its final spot to make room for another. Every board here starts from legal moves, so a solution exists.
